Stress Corrosion of I-182 Weld Metal in High Temperature Water—The Effect of a Carbon Steel Couple

Summary: | The effect of a carbon steel couple on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of I-182 weld metal in oxygen-containing pure water at 288 deg C was investigated with a series of slow strain rate (2 x 10 exp --7 s exp --1 ) tests. The results indicated that I-182 was immune to SCC in the absence of a crevice and susceptible to SCC in the presence of a crevice. Coupling to A508 C steel either had an inhibiting effect on SCC in I-182 or no effect at all. Transgranular SCC was observed in the A508 in both the creviced and the uncreviced conditions. Crack nucleation in A508 occurred at oxide-filled pits that were apparently associated with sulfide inclusions. 12 ref.--AA |
