The workshop explored the role of the ISSN by contrasting its past role with current and potential future roles. The explosive growth in the electronic environment is one of the key factors in the rise in demand for ISSN assignment. The greater volume of information, the needs of e-commerce and the movement toward rule harmonization among the 3 key players -AACR, ISBD (CR) and ISSN centers - are factors providing impetus for a new appraisal of the scope and roles of the ISSN. Strategic planning for future ISSN challenges, roles and services was also presented and discussed.
