Measurement of oxygen fugacities under reducing conditions: non-Nernstian behavior of Y2O3-doped zirconia oxygen sensors

This study presents a simple procedure for correcting measurements using Y2O3-stabilized oxygen sensors so that oxygen fugacities can be determined accurately (+/- 0.2 log units) even under extremely reducing conditions. Description
Summary:This study presents a simple procedure for correcting measurements using Y2O3-stabilized oxygen sensors so that oxygen fugacities can be determined accurately (+/- 0.2 log units) even under extremely reducing conditions. The corrections necessary for an SIRO2 oxygen sensor, constructed from an alumina plus YSZ electrolyte plug inserted into an alumina tube and welded to form a gas tight seal, are determined. The present measurements give directly the corrections necessary for obtaining oxygen fugacities from measured emf's. (AIAA)
