Description
Summary:Unequal treatment of people with mental retardation in the areas of education, employment, social activities, & housing have resulted in poor education (if any), significantly lower wages, little opportunities for social integration & a denial of the right to community living. Discussed here are recent events in Hong Kong pertaining to two key areas of discrimination: employment & housing. To ensure equal rights & maximum opportunities, parents, professionals & people with mental retardation themselves have to take a more active role as advocates. Some effective ways of tackling discrimination are noted, with special reference to Asian countries. 31 References. Adapted from the source document.
