Summary: | Vegetatively propagated trees from the peach seedling HKH×FLP3, which was selected from a cross between high chill ‘Hakuho’ and low chill ‘Flordaprince’, were forced in a glasshouse from 300, 500 and 700 h of chilling accumulation below 7°C. Under forcing from 300 and 500 CH, effects of rest-breaking agents were also investigated. Forcing from 300 CH did not induce bud break. Under forcing from 500 and 700 CH, however, the flower and leaf buds began sprouting about two weeks after starting forcing and the final burst rates exceeded 60%. On the other hand, treatments of calcium cyanamide and hydrogen cyanamide induced bud break three weeks after the onset of heating even when forcing was started from 300 CH and the rates of bud burst in these treatments reached more than 60%. Forcing culture from 500 CH accelerated bloom and harvest by about six weeks and that from 300 CH with rest-breaking treatments accelerated them by one more week. The results suggested that by using the selection HKH×FLP3, forcing could be initiated from 500 CH and that even under forcing from 300 CH, the rest-breaking agents would enable buds to burst sufficiently. This implies that the selection HKH×FLP3 could be applicable to cultivate in sub-tropical area with about 300 h of chilling accumulation using the rest-breaking agents. |
