Description
Summary:"Language Consciousness in the Hebrew Bible" (pp. 51-73) examines the biblical perspectives on phonetics, puns, style, semantic change, rhetoric, euphemisms, and so on. "Observations About the Pronunciation of Hebrew in Rabbinic Sources" (pp. 75-99) demonstrates the less than satisfactory phonetic sophistication by the author(s) of Bereshit Rabba (12:10) describing [h]: "All letters engage the tongue, but this one does not engage the tongue" (p. 96). Part two contains four articles dealing with orthographic reform, unpointed Hebrew (H. N. Bialik wanted all Hebrew printed with vowel points [p. 130]), transliterations and transcriptions, and an annotated bibliography on Hebrew script reform.
