Abstract For the purposes of this article the author considers that an essential element of "public interest law" is that the lawyer practising in this area will also be actively involved in either politically or administratively related activities, and also in strategic publicity aimed at the individuals the activity intends to benefit. The first part of the paper discusses the major developments in "public interest law" from 1969-1984 which have resulted in the establishment of "public interest law" organisations. Two of these, the Working Group on Legal Aid for Immigrants and the SOBI, are then examined as working models.
