Summary: | In a recent article in the Journal of Field Archaeology ("The Pre-Chavin Stone Sculpture of Casma and Pacopampa," 16 [1989] 478-485) Richard Burger describes a stone sculpture from Pacopampa that is somewhat similar to a stone that the authors of the present article discovered in 1987 on Huaca A at Pampa de las Llamas-Moxeke in the Casma Valley ("An Early Stone Carving from Pampa de las Llamas-Moxeke, Casma Valley, Peru," Journal of Field Archaeology 15 [1988] 114-119). Newly obtained radiocarbon dates from Pampa de las Llamas-Moxeke since the 1988 publication indicate that the Initial Period occupation of the site ranges from 1600-1200 b.c. (uncalibrated) and that the construction phase to which the carved stone of Huaca A belongs probably dates to about 1300-1200 b.c. The Cerro Sechin carvings are possibly contemporary with the Huaca A carved stone, but caution should be taken since those carvings are associated with only a single radiocarbon date. |
