Description
Summary:Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Beliefs about Third Hand Smoke (BATHS) scale. Methods: This methodological study was carried out in a family health center in İzmir between March 1st and May 1st, 2018. The research sample was selected by simple random sampling method among individuals over the age of 18 who applied to the family health center for any reason and who agreed to participate in the study. Data was collected by the "BATHS questionnaire and scale". “Internal consistency analysis, item-total correlation analysis, test-retest and Pearson Moment Correlation analyzes” were used for the reliability analyzes of the scale and " Exploratory Factor Analysis " was applied for factor structure validity. The suitability of the data for factor analysis was assessed using the Kaiser-Meyer-Okin (KMO) value and the Barlett's test. Results: The mean age of the participants was 38.1 ± 11.1, 51.9% were female, 50% had high school graduates, 71.2% were married. In the reliability analyzes, the Cronbach alpha value was 0.88. The item-total correlations ranged from 0.46 to 0.84. In the validity analyzes, KMO value was 0.766 and Barlett value was p <.000, which supported that the sample was adequate and suitable for factor analysis. After factor analysis for the construct validity of the scale, 9 items describing 71.2% of the total variance were collected in 2 sub-dimensions as in the original scale. The mean score of the BATHS scale was 4.3 ± 0.7 and it was concluded that the individuals in the research group had a positive belief and attitude regarding the effects of third-hand smoke and health effects. Conclusions: As a result of the analyzes, it was seen that the Turkish version of the BATHS scale was a measurement tool with sufficient reliability and validity indicators to measure the belief and attitude towards third-hand smoke exposure.
