Description
Summary:Product of guarana is most popular in Brazil and it is appreciated as source of energy, and also for human health improvement. The guarana seed is known as a high source of tannins with many reports highlighting the high concentration of this compound. On the other hand, various organics compounds are currently used in wastewater treatment process due to its coagulant's properties. In this work agroindustrial waste of guarana (seed peel) was used as a potential coagulant for wastewater treatment. In this work, agroindustrial waste of guarana (seed peel) was tested as a potential coagulant for wastewater treatment using real samples of wastewater in Jartest assays with four different types of extracts, as acid, aqueous, organic and saline. The organic extract Obtained from guarana agroindustrial waste was able to remove above 90 % of turbidity in wastewater sample with fast sedimentation time. The high and fast rate of turbidity removal was attributed to substances as polyphenols pyrogallol, catechine and aucubin identified by GC/MS in the organic extract derivatized by BSTFA. These results are indicative to guarana waste potential as a sustainable product to be developed to wastewater treatment. [Display omitted] •Guarana waste shows potential as an organic coagulant for wastewater treatment.•Organic extract had the best performance in removing turbidity and TSS.•Fast sedimentation within 8 min was observed with the organic extract.•Guarana waste extract demonstrates potential as an organic coagulant sustainable.•Guarana waste provides an environmentally solution for wastewater treatment.
