Description
Summary:OBJECTIVE:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – risk factor of atrial fibrillation (AFib) especially in patients with obesity and hypertension, but pathogenesis is still unknown. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) – biomarker of fibrosis increased in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). Objective of the study was to evaluate levels of Gal-3 in patients with OSA and AFib. DESIGN AND METHOD:60 patients 35–65 years old with AFib were examined35 with OSA and 25 without OSA. The examination incorporatedmedical history, anthropometry, echocardiography, cardiorespiratory monitoring (OSA was determined in patients with index of apnea/hypopnea (AHI) more than 5 per hour), serum Gal-3 (ELISA). Control groups included patients with OSA and without AFib (30) and healthy peoples without AFib and OSA (n = 35). RESULTS:Serum Gal-3 in patients with OSA(+)/AFib(+) was higher than in patients OSA(+)/AFib(-) and higher than in healthy subjects (1230,1 [720,2;2140,1] and 450,2 [341,1;720,2] and 240,3 [141,1;350,2] pg/ml, p < 0,001). Gal-3 in patients with OSA(+)/AFib(+) was higher as compared to patients with OSA(-)/AFib(+) (1230,1 [720.2;2140,1] and 540,3 [410,1;1310,2] pg/ml, p = 0,01). Gal-3 was positive correlated with waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides and fasting glucose (r = 0,743; 0,662; 0,564; 0,531, p < 0,001) and negative correlated with the HDL cholesterol (r = −0,553, p < 0.001). AHI was positive correlated with level of Gal-3 (r = 0,456, p = 0,03) and left atrium diameter (r = 0,512, p = 0,001). CONCLUSIONS:The level of serum galectin 3 in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation is higher than in patients without apnea. We suspect that profibrogenic activity in patients with sleep apnea can impact on risk of atrial fibrillation.
