Description
Summary:José Manuel Tengarrinha was one of the first Portuguese historians to make an overarching study of the history of the periodical press in Portugal, from its beginnings to the establishment of the First Republic and, from a structural perspective, of the rural and urban social conflicts in Portugal, from the mid-eighteenth century to the emergence of the Estado Novo. This collective article, with an evocative character, includes: a brief intellectual biography of the late historian, highlighting the most striking features of his historiographical work; an appraisal of his contribution to the knowledge of social struggles in Portugal; and a brief personal evocation by a colleague who closely followed his historiographical and civic journey.
