Synthesis and structural study of the new perovskite series CaLn2ZnTi2O9 (=(Ca1/3Ln2/3)A(Zn1/3Ti2/3)BO3) (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Eu)

Summary: | The new perovskites CaLn2ZnTi2O9 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Eu) have been synthesized in polycrystalline form by a conventional solid-state reactions process at 1300 deg C in air atmosphere. The structure refinement of the four samples, by Rietveld analysis using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), shows that the cationic distribution over the A-and B-sites of the perovskite structure can be illustrated by the crystallographic formula (Ca1/3Ln2/3)A(Zn1/3Ti2/3)BO3. All phases were described as orthorhombic perovskites with a GdFeO3-type structure, Pbnm space group, in which A (Ca(Ln)) and B (Zn(Ti)) cations are disordered at random. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the selected (Ca1/3Pr2/3)A(Zn1/3Ti2/3)BO3 phase are consistent with the presence of Pr3+ ions in this compound. |
