Description
Summary:During the surveying work carried out for the preparation of the "Nuova Pianta di Roma" (1736-1738/39) by Giovanni Battista Nolli, one of his assistants, Ferdinando Mariani, was charged to identify and to describe all the ancient structures. Analysis of the notes regarding the northern part of the plain of Testaccio (the only ones on the Sub-Aventine area which have been preserved), combined with the discovery of unpublished archival material, has revealed new and interesting information about the ancient topography of the area. It has, for instance, enabled identification of a large new store complex which was located between the Horrea Galbana and the Porticus Aemilia during the Imperial Age. Moreover, these data have shed new light on the processes that led to the formation of the rural landscape of medieval and modern Testaccio.
