Abstract | A new species of calanoid copepod, Stephos boettgerschnackae, was collected from an anchialine cave in the Kvarner region (Croatia). This is the first record of the genus from the Adriatic Sea. The new species is distinguished from other Stephos spp. by a combination of the following features: last pedigerous somite asymmetrical; female genital double-somite asymmetrical in ventral view and slightly longer than wide, single operculum with posteriorly a spiniform process; antennules of both sexes symmetrical, 24-segmented, and very long, reaching almost to end of caudal rami; antennal exopod 7-segmented; maxillule with 14 armature elements on praecoxal arthrite; female 5 th legs symmetrical, uniramous, and 3-segmented, terminal segment armed with spinules distally along inner and outer margin, transverse comb of spinules at mid-length, single small spine on anterior surface; male 5 th legs uniramous and asymmetrical, right leg 4-segmented, left 5-segmented with segment 4 hardly swollen and segment 5 very complex. |
