Description
Summary:The structure of the area represents a thin-skinned foreland thrust belt of Variscan age with a dominant movement to the N; the three-dimensional geometry of the linked thrust system shows a N-S shortening of 20 km (40%). A thick thrust wedge of pre-Old Red Sandstone basement in the W has produced the Mendip periclines, and erosion to lower stratigraphic levels in the W and S; these are Lower on Upper Carboniferous klippen.
