Description
Summary:This paper presents an overview of load modulation as an efficiency enhancement technique for radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs). A generalization of active load modulation is used to analyze different efficiency enhancement architectures such as the Doherty PA and the outphasing amplifier, providing qualitative insight of the techniques. Solutions to the challenges presented in load modulation PA design such as linearity, RF, baseband bandwidth and back-off efficiency enhancement are discussed through examples from the state-of-the art.
