Summary: | The paper consists of two parts. In the first part of the paper we have tried to define the term neologism by taking into consideration the previous studies of this phenomenon. Therefore, a neologism is a relatively recent word that may be in the process of entering the common use, but it has not yet been accepted into the mainstream language. Neologisms are often directly attributable to a specific person, period or event. Opinions differ on exactly how old a word must be to cease being considered a neologism. Neologisms are often created by combining the existing words, or by giving words new suffixes or prefixes. In the second part of this paper the construction of neologisms is analysed, through the process of derivation by adding a suffix to a noun constitutive basis, in order to determine what the most common suffixes of domestic and foreign origin in Serbian language are. We restricted our survey to the neologisms in journalistic style, in fact the corpus consisted of daily newspapers. We found that the most frequent suffixes of domestic origin are: -ac, -aš, -ak, -stvo, -ost, and of foreign origin: -izacija, -acija, -cija, -ada, -ijada, -izam, -ista (a), -nje. Neologisms have become popular due to the technological advancement of digital era especially through mass media and the internet, and nowadays can be found in any domain: science, fiction, literature and popular culture. They enrich the vocabulary of one language, therefore they should not be avoided. |
