Description
Summary:We propose new methods for the analysis of regularities of the kinetics of growth of external corrosion crack in the walls of underground metal pipelines with regard for the given internal pressure and cathodic protection. They are based on the analysis of corrosion currents at the crack tips taking into account the mechanical stresses, Ohmic potential drop, and overvoltage of the anodic dissolution of the metal. We propose an improved method for the evaluation of the service life of underground metallic pipelines in view of the influence of mechanical stresses formed in the vicinity of the crack tip on corrosion currents. It is shown that mechanical stresses lead to a decrease in the service life of the pipeline by a factor of 3.6 as compared with the case where the internal pressure is close to atmospheric.
