Description
Summary:Linea nigra, one of the physiologic changes during pregnancy, is a dark vertical line that grows from the pubic area up to the umbilicus. According to an old wives' tale, the length of linea nigra is said to determine the gender of the unborn child. This study aimed to examine if there is any significant relationship between the length of linea nigra and the gender of the baby among pregnant mothers in their 38th to 42nd weeks of pregnancy. Non-experimental correlational method was used in this study. The samples (n = 35) were selected through convenience sampling. The mother's age, number of pregnancy and children and marital status were not part of the analysis. The primary method of collecting quantitative data was through the use of a 12 megapixel digital camera, record sheet and tape measure. The results obtained were analysed using the chi-square. The findings showed no significant relationship between the length of linea nigra and the gender of the baby when born. Future studies could increase the number of participants and hospitals. Further, it is recommended that future studies could take into account the degree of pigmentation and the straightness of the linea nigra.
