Postharvest physiology of two pineapple guava (feijoa) fruit (Acca sellowiana O. Berg Burret) cultivars submitted to cold quarantine treatment

Description
Quarantine treatment T-107-b (1.67 oC for 22 d) was tested on two pineapple guava cultivars' quality and shelf life. Two cultivars ('Cenaf 41' and Cenaf 8-4') were used. Fruit which had been subjected to cold quarantine treatment was compared with fruit maintained at ambient temperature (19.0 ºC), simulating conditions during transport and sale. The fruits' internal temperature was recorded during treatment. Fruit was chemically and physiologically analysed before and after the cold quarantine treatment. Respiration rate presented typical climacteric behaviour. The amount of soluble solids and pH increased whilst titratable acidity decreased. In all cases, the cold quarantine treatment had no detectable effect on the organoleptic properties of fruit from both cultivars. Fruit undergoing quarantine treatment and controls showed similar post-harvest behaviour when transport and sale conditions were simulated.
