Description
Summary:Occipital neuralgia is a known cause of headaches, characterized by sharp, electrical paroxysmal pain involving the occipital nerves (the greater, lesser, and third). For patients who have failed conservative therapeutic approaches, peripheral nerve stimulation has been employed for treatment of the neuropathic pain disorders. Extensive reports have described positive response following the use of this modality. Carefully selecting patients is a prerequisite for a successful outcome. Occipital nerve stimulation is a safe and relatively effective method for treatment of occipital neuralgia. This chapter will review the clinical presentation of patients with occipital neuralgia, implantation techniques, approaches, and stimulation parameters.
