Summary: | Zea mays L. cultivars Agati-76 and Vijay have been scanned for peroxidase isozyme changes under varying water stress. Water stress did not induce the synthesis of any new isozyme in either cultivar, but one band with low electrophoretic mobility (RF0.29) disappeared in leaves of the susceptible cv. Vijay. A significant inhibition of enzyme activity on a protein basis was observed in both cultivars, but to a greater extent in the susceptible cultivar, Vijay. Enhanced enzyme activity on a fresh wt basis was recorded in cv. Agati-76 with increasing stress. Peroxidase activity declined in stressed roots of both cultivars. A highly significant negative correlation was found between enzyme activity and water saturation deficit. The possible physiological role of peroxidase in drought resistance is discussed. |
