Description
Summary:Ministry leadership in the 21st century is a difficult task. The only stable foundation for ministry is a relationship of intimacy with God. Intimacy with God is the result of ongoing spiritual formation in the life of the leader. There are various obstacles which work against the spiritual formation of Christian leaders. One obstacle is the amount of busyness in the lives of ministry leaders. Another is the reality that many leaders have not been trained in issues related to spiritual formation. Is there a way out of this dilemma? Can ministry leaders escape the tyranny of busyness and implement practices that will result in the deepening of their spiritual lives? This doctoral project looks at the negative impact that busyness creates in the lives of ministry leaders. It also surveys 200 Vineyard pastors regarding their training and practice in issues related to spiritual formation. Ministry leaders can be helped in overcoming these obstacles through an understanding of spiritual formation and engagement in various contemplative practices. These solutions are presented in a curriculum plan designed for a five day retreat for Vineyard leaders.
