Description
Summary:This study explores grit, perseverance, and conscientiousness, and their relation to academic success. This study aimed to replicate prior research findings on the relation of grit with GPA and add to the body of research with undergraduate students. In addition to replication, it is important to understand the relation of grit with GPA while accounting for perseverance and conscientiousness because researchers have not evaluated grit with strong controls; thus, this study addressed a particular limitation of past research by including perseverance and conscientiousness as covariates. The relation between grit and GPA was evaluated across two groups of undergraduate students: U.S. Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) cadets and those without high-demand extracurricular activities. Participants completed the survey with the Grit-S Scale, the CAQ Motivation/Persistence subscale, and the 9-item conscientiousness subscale of the Big Five Inventory (BFI). Results indicated that the AFROTC cadets had higher mean grit than non-ROTC undergraduates, grit was correlated with GPA, perseverance, and conscientiousness, but grit was not correlated with GPA in the final regression model that included perseverance and conscientiousness as covariates.
