Summary: | An investigation was conducted to examine the hardness, friction, and wear behavior of MgO, Fe, and Ni exposed to corrosive media. The results indicate that MgCl sub 2 films are formed on cleaved MgO surfaces from their interactions with HCl-containing solutions. The MgCl sub 2 films soften the MgO surfaces and cause high friction and considerable deformation. Neither the p H value of nor the immersion time in NaOH-containing, NaCl-containing, and HNO sub 3 -containing solutions influences the hardness of MgO. NaOH forms a protective and low-friction film on Fe surfaces at concentrations of NaOH > 0.01N . NaOH at concentrations of 0.001-20N forms a protective film on Ni that provides low friction and reduces damage due to wear. In ordinary water the Ni surface sustains considerable wear damage. 22 ref.--AA |
