Summary:•It is an improved, concise and cost effective process for commercial production of Ticagrelor.•The process is developed based on the utilization of some of the green chemistry protocols.•The current process is enough robust to produce required quality of Ticagrelor by controlling impurities such as hydroxy ticagrelor, amino ticagrelor and other impurities at various stages of the process.•This is the best process of all other methods available for the preparation of Ticagrelor with 70% overall yield and ∼99.7% HPLC purity. An improved, greener, column chromatography free and cost effective process for the preparation of ticagrelor in short route with an overall yield of 70% and 99.7% purity is reported. The process is substantially free from impurities such as hydroxy ticagrelor and amino ticagrelor, etc. In addition to this, the present process is highly robust in controlling all impurity percentages to be within the desired quality of ticagrelor.
