Summary: | The paper describes the necessary development of grid management systems: How grid management and grid operation need to transform from a rather descriptive and diagnostic approach, that mainly consists in the analysis of past events (hindsight), towards processes and applications that utilize (new) opportunities in software development, data management and analytics, and artificial intelligence to increase insights and allow for proactive, if not (semi-) autonomous grid operation. The paper also describes new design principles, that determine and define the new way of grid management systems and how they are developed and operated: Interoperable, modular, open, resilient & cyber secure, and collaborative. In result, trends and challenges, as well as implications and consequences for grid operation are described and lead towards the definition of the next generation of grid management systems. |
