Description
Summary:Physical rehabilitation is a critical component of healthcare for older adults, aiming to maintain or improve their quality of life by addressing age-related physical limitations. However, adherence to physical rehabilitation can be challenging and unmotivating, leading to compliance inconsistency and less than ideal results. To address this issue, INESCTEC’s VR2Care project objective is to leverage health results and quality of life in smart ageing care environments by developing a Virtual Reality multi-user experience, where patients and therapists/coaches can exercise in an embodied virtual environment, with gamified elements to boost engagement and motivation. The present work aims to develop the foundation of this platform, consisting of a Virtual Reality multiplayer application developed with the Unity game engine. In the experimental stage of this project, Unity’s networking tools were utilized to create the initial server-client communication, connecting clients to their respective sessions. Each client also has an embodied avatar, customized to their likeness, via integration with the ReadyPlayerMe software. A voice chat solution was also implemented utilizing the Dissonance for Unity Netcode for GameObjects asset, to allow therapists and patients to communicate in real time. The platform was extensively tested with project partners to achieve a stable product ready for the next stage of development.
