Description
Summary:Extensive studies were conducted by the INT'l Reference Group on Great Lakes Pollution from land use activities to determine: nonpoint sources of pollution to the Great Lakes; impacts of pollution from nonpoint sources on the ecosystems and aquatic life of the lakes; and practical remedial measures that may be applied to alleviate this pollution. Land form, rather than specific land uses, was identified as the primary factor in nonpoint source pollution problems. Land form characteristics include soil texture, soil type, surficial geology, soil chemistry, and physiography. Effects of climate, urban development, and fertilizer and pesticide use were considered.
