Summary: | Many industrial wastes have significant influence on growth and physiological process of plants. This study evaluated effect of spent engine oil (SEO) on Telfairia occidentalis, Corchorus olitorius and Amaranthus hybridus. The experiment was laid using Randomized Completely Block Design with five replicates. The vegetables were sprayed with 20, 40, 60, 80 100 mgL-1 of SEO. Water served as control. Heavy metals were determined in the leaves and stems of the vegetables 2, 4 and 6 weeks after treatments. Results showed that Iron was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in T. occidentalis (798.0 mg/kg), C. olitorus (667.0 mg/kg) and A. hybridus (601.0 mg/kg) leaves treated with 100 mgL-1 of SEO.Copper was higher in T. occidentalis (64.0 mg/kg), C. olitorus (78.0 mg/kg) and A. hybridusleaves (75.0 mg/kg) treated with 100 mgL-1.The same observation was noticed in the amount of copper observed in stems of the vegetables treated with same treatments. Further, Zinc (118.0 mg/kg, 126.0 mg/kg and 123.0 mg/kg) and lead (181 mg/kg, 218 mg/kg and 186 mg/kg) were higher in the leaves and stems of the vegetables treated with 100 mgL-1of SEO oil. SEO enhanced heavy metal accumulation in the vegetables; therefore inappropriate usage of SEO should be discouraged. |
