Summary: | •JAEA has conducted considerable works on the R&Ds of HTGR technologies through design, construction, operation, and maintenance of HTTR.•HTTR heat application test was launched to demonstrate hydrogen production by coupling the HTTR with the hydrogen production facility.•The HTGR demonstration reactor in Japan aims to produce large-scale, stable, and economically competitive hydrogen.
High temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) with inherent safe characteristics has a potential to contribute to decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries by supplying a large amount of hydrogen and high temperature heat or steam without carbon dioxide emission. Promotion of R&D on HTGR and hydrogen production technology is stated in Japanese policies, e,g, The Sixth Strategic Energy Plan and Basic Policy for Realization of Green Transformation (GX). Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting R&Ds for HTGR technologies with a central focus on the use of High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). Based on the knowledge accumulated from the various HTTR’s tests conducted so far, JAEA obtained the permission of changes to reactor installation in June 2020 and loss of forced cooing (LOFC) test which simulates the situation where the reactor cannot be cooled and shutdown as a joint the OECD/NEA international research project was carried out in January 2022. JAEA has launched the HTTR heat application test plan which demonstrate hydrogen production by coupling the HTTR with a hydrogen production test facility. The demonstration of hydrogen production is expected to be completed by 2030. Aiming for operation start from the latter half of 2030s, the basic design of the HTGR demonstration reactor is started from 2023. The Japan’s HTGR technology capabilities established by the HTTR project will be fully utilized for the construction of HTGR demonstration reactor. |
