Description
Summary:Over recent decades, the role of universities has developed and has become more complicated. Their core responsibilities are teaching and researching, which help educate people to work efficiently and contribute to the academic field. However, universities worldwide have carried out more and more functions besides academic missions, which include social responsibility.Although several studies have addressed the important role of universities in achieving SDGs, which strategies universities are formulating to apply sustainable development goals in practice are poorly understood. This thesis aims to examine how top-tier universities in the world support the SDGs and which strategies that universities can use to implement these goals. To answer these questions, a mixed approach that includes literature analysis and case study is applied to look deeper into the sustainable development activities of universities. The research collects data from the SDGs annual reports, website content, as well as all the digital newspapers related to world-leading universities that have succeeded in contributing to the SDGs. Based on researching how the top universities are committed to their societal responsibility, this research proposes five strategies that higher education institutions can apply to contribute to achieving all of the UN 17 SDGs in the future. Besides that, the real situation from a Taiwanese university case study is also illustrated. In the end, the findings provide some suggestions for universities to raise the contribution toward achieving the goals across the entire school.
