| Summary: | How to teach phonics to young children is a question that teachers have studied with for many years. Children who come from economically depressed urban areas often have different needs in regards to learning phonics. Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) is one method of teaching phonics that has met with success, because software can often be adapted to meet the individual needs of students. Bugs in Space is a CAI phonics program that was developed to teach rhymes, or chunks of letters, to children who need a great deal of repetition. Bugs in Space was field tested at an inner-city school in Long Beach, California, with thirty-nine kindergartners. The test results showed a statistical improvement in phonemic rhyme knowledge. The results of an affective questionnaire indicated that students were motivated to learn using Bugs in Space . |
