Description
Summary:The influence of heat treatments on microstructure and magnetic domains in duplex stainless steel S31803 is studied using an innovative structural characterization protocol. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps as well as magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images acquired on the same region of the sample, before and after heat treatment, are compared. The influence of heat treatments on the phase volumetric fractions is studied, and several structural modifications after heat treatment are highlighted. Three different mechanisms for the decomposition of ferrite into sigma phase and secondary austenite are observed during annealing at 800 °C. MFM analysis reveals that a variety of magnetic domain patterns can exist in one ferrite grain.
