Description
Summary:This article provides an overview of a particular genre in Arabic literature which has been unjustly neglected in Arabic literary theory, namely the poetry of the Islamic Jurists. Drawing on ʿAbdallāh Gannūm's anthology of the poetry of Islamic Jurists, Adab al-Fuqahāʾ, an attempt is made to do justice to the poetic work of these Islamic jurists in all its variety and throughout the ages. By presenting innumerable counterclaims and examples, the traditionally negative opinion about this genre of poetry is credibly weakened and the absurdity of the traditional arguments is demonstrated. The selected excerpts from the poems show clearly and convincingly that, despite all polemics, there was indeed a considerable body of poetry authored by respected Jurists corroborating the thesis of a coexistence of theology and profane poetry in Islamic literary history.
