Summary: | Laboratory experiments on treatment of selected pulp mill waste waters in upward-flow anaerobic sludge-blanket (UASB) reactors and in upward-flow anaerobic filters are reported. Nutrient supplements were added to the waste waters before treatment. COD removals ranged from 20 per cent for waste waters from cellulose washing, which contained refractory organic compounds such as lignins, resins and tannins, up to 90 per cent for waste water from acid hydrolysis of wood in sulphate cellulose production. |
