A comparison of the micrometer caliper and the microscopic measurements of wool fibers

The microscope has long been recognized as an instrument of unquestioned accuracy for use in the determination of the diameter of wool fibers. Nathusius (1) in 1866, MoMurtie (2) in 1886, Davis (3) and Holden (4) in 1922, and Gordon (5) in 1923 have all used it for this purpose. Davis and Holden use...

Description
Summary:The microscope has long been recognized as an instrument of unquestioned accuracy for use in the determination of the diameter of wool fibers. Nathusius (1) in 1866, MoMurtie (2) in 1886, Davis (3) and Holden (4) in 1922, and Gordon (5) in 1923 have all used it for this purpose. Davis and Holden used projected microscopic images in their work while the other investigators made direct micrometer measurements of the fiber in the microscopic field. Hardy (E) first made scientific use of the micrometer caliper in the measurement of wool fibers in connection with his humidity studies.
