Description
Summary:This paper introduces the application of a Back-To-Back (BtB) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) to operate optimally a radial microgrid. Some pending technical issues in microgrids and how they could be solved or improved by using this proposal, as well as other general applications of this BtB converter in microgrids will be pointed out. One of the points highlighted and analyzed in this work is the possibility to have two levels of island mode, one of them by using the DC link corresponding to the BtB converter and the second one by using the converters interfacing the energy sources integrated to the microgrid. This application will give more reliability to the microgrid when it is intended to work independently from the upstream system. Simulation results of two levels of island mode are presented, showing the good performance of the BtB converter interfacing a microgrid.
