Summary: | Evaluation and observation of teachers for purposes of determining grading, promotion and pay raises are frequently used in classrooms throughout the country. Concern for evaluation and observation of teachers has led to the development of a number of better ways to determine teacher effectiveness. Evaluation was once used for purposes of control and inspection and was done by lay people. Eventually evaluation moved to the area of teacher observation with the emergence of a supervisory position in the administrative hierarchy. The evaluation tools used by supervisors and administration personnel have been checklists, anecdotal records, or rating systems used primarily for the purpose of evaluating effective teaching (Lamb and Swick, 1975). More recent systems use verbal and nonverbal teacher behavior as a means of analyzing teaching. A growing number of observational systems have been developed through the years and many are widely used. |
