Description
Summary:The hydrodynamics of coastal upwelling is investigated using a gravity reduced finite element model based on a Petrov-Galerkin formulation that includes a stabilising operator to improve the classical Galerkin approach. The model includes the essential dynamic processes. Solutions are found in a regional ocean basin. The study case is the Cabo Frio Coast (Rio de Janeiro - Brazil), a sensitive hydrodynamic coastal system with NE wind prevailing pattern (favourable to upwelling events). The numerical experiments evaluate the patterns produced under uniform and non uniform wind fields. The resulting patterns are in agreement with reported features of the Cabo Frio upwelling. Particular phenomena such as coastal jet, inertial waves and eddies formation are modelled.
