Summary:The combining ability analysis in a 10 × 10 diallel revealed the presence of both additive as well as non-additive gene effects for harvest index, biological yield, grain yield, plant height and tillers per plant. However, degree of dominance confirmed the preponderance of non-additive gene effects for all these traits. Based on g c a and per se performance, BH 36 appeared to be the best whereas BH 38, BH 31 and DL 247 were desirable for harvest index and one or more components of grain yield. These parents also figured to yield crosses with high specific combining ability effects. A high positive correlation was observed between harvest index and grain yield. Results are discussed in light of their importance in barley breeding.
