Description
Summary:The present study examines the impact of the principles of one Transformational Leadership Model (Bass and Avolio, 1985) on intentional changes in leadership practices introduced in limited areas of ministry at Sacred Heart Parish in Delta, British Columbia. The purpose of this study is a development of a functional leadership training model that could be practiced in various organizations within my congregation and possibly in other Roman Catholic parishes. This leadership training model is intended to help parish organizations and individuals with their development of a compelling vision of the future. The need for this study arises in light of significant social and ecclesial changes that already have an impact on our community and will most probably transform our leadership practices in the future. Those changes challenge the traditional Roman Catholic approach to leadership and point to the lack of leadership and theological training available to the lay members of our church. Transformational Leadership is a popular leadership theory that describes two opposite dimensions known as transactional and transformational leadership styles. Four principles of this theory---idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration---are central to formulating the leadership training program described in this paper. Research data was collected through observations of a modified Alpha leadership training (testing vehicle), evaluations of the training process, and a set of interviews with twelve church leaders. The research is driven by three hypotheses that: (1) the availability of quality leadership training in our parish will help to develop a compelling vision of the parish's future; (2) the conscious effort to develop leaders and to articulate a vision shared by the congregation will unite the specific endeavors of parish groups under a common vision of the future; and (3) more members of the community will be able to develop and apply their leadership skills in their community involvement and private lives. The results of this project support these hypotheses but also suggest that further studies have to be continued in order to develop a model applicable in other areas of church ministry.
