Description
Summary:Due to massive industrialization and intensive agriculture techniques, sustainable solutions for environmental contamination with persistent pollutants are required to avoid their effects not only for the environment, but also for ecological and human health. The present work briefly investigates and describes the presence of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in waters and their effects within the whole environmental system including human health, followed by the interaction between microorganisms and pollutants considering the biosorption process, a low-cost and sustainable alternative to conventional processes used for wastewater treatment.
