Summary:The MDI technique (Method of Diffusion Extraction) was developed in the 1980's in Russia where it is presently applied in exploration for blind mineral deposits. It belongs to a group of partial extraction sampling techniques that locate concealed deposits by identification of their secondary epigenetic haloes in surface sediments. MDI is based on an in situ extraction of mobile forms of pathfinder elements. These mobile forms are collected into acid-filled, porous element collectors that are placed into the ground at each measurement point. The extraction process is principally due to ionic diffusion across concentration gradient. In Israel, MDI exploration has been tested at three sites in the Negev Desert: Ein Yahav Dyke, Ashosh Plug, and Ramon Fault. These three sites contain known mineralization. Also, a test profile was made over the Kokhav Oil Field, Ashqelon area, where the soils are heavily disturbed by farming. In the Negev Desert, multi-element anomalies were observed in wadi fill over all three mineralized zones. At the Ein Yahav and Ramon sites, the composition of the identified haloes correlates well with that of the concealed mineralization. At the Kokhav Oil Field, “rabbit ears” anomalies in 5 elements were detected over the transition zones.
