Summary:IN recent years Candida albicans, a yeast that is part of the normal human intestinal flora, has been thought by some to cause a disorder variously known as the candidiasis hypersensitivity syndrome, chronic candidiasis, candida-related complex, and the "yeast connection." 1 2 3 According to Truss and Crook, 1 , 2 the primary proponents of this hypothesis, the syndrome is caused by an overgrowth of C. albicans on mucous membranes and in the gastrointestinal tract in response to several factors, including the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics or oral contraceptives and pregnancy.
