Description
Summary:The Darfur conflict inspired Illinois' General Assembly members to put aside partisan differences and pass a bill that leveraged economic incentives for human rightspurposes. Despite criticism of the bill from political and financial agencies, this law prohibits the Illinois treasurer and state pension funds from investing in Sudanor companies that do business there. Other states and businesses have since made similar policies. The General Assembly's success, despite political division on other issues, leaves open the tantalizing prospect of finding common ground in other areas.
