Summary: | This research project examines the relationship between the assist-to-turnover ratio and winning basketball games in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in the 2008-2012 basketball seasons. The assist-to-turnover ratio was compared to a team's winning percentage. Analysis of data consisted of using a Pearson correlation coefficient to determine the strength between the two variables. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation (r(64) = .556 p = .000) between teams' assist-to-turnover ratio and their winning percentage in the NSIC men's basketball seasons for the 2008 through 2012 basketball seasons. The study also researched each team's home and away assist totals. An independent samples t-test was used to compare assist totals for each team. Teams consistently had more assists at home than on the road in each season of this study. For the 2008 through 2012 seasons, there was a significant difference between the mean home and away assist totals (t(130) = 5.18, p = .000). Results of this study provide relevant information for basketball programs, coaches, players, and fans regarding the importance of the assist-to-turnover ratio in the game of basketball. |
