Description
Summary:This study investigated the feasibility of objectively assessing the recreation resource of an even-aged plantation in order to obtain detailed information such as the location of suitable areas for picnicking camping, and horse riding. The value of any objective method of assessment is that it can be consistently applied under a variety of conditions by various personnel, and is in this respect superior to a subjective approach. The method adopted in this study was based on various methods previously used to assess recreation and other environmental resources. The study area was a typical pine plantation in the Australian Capital Territory. The assessment was approached in three stages. Firstly, feasible forms of recreation were identified - these included picnicking, camping, bush walking, trail bike and horse riding. Secondly, the requirements or resource factors relevant to each of the forms of recreation were identified - for instance, picnicking was considered in terms of slope, shading, soils, aspect, views etc. Finally, these resource factors were evaluated to identify areas suitable for each form of recreation by using a combination of map overlays and field assessments. It was concluded that attempting to formalize the method of assessment to the extent used in this study was not feasible and a modified approach is advocated.
