Description
Summary:Today 104 nuclear power plants produce one-fifth of Americas electricity. In addition, US electric utilities are preparing to build advanced-design nuclear power plants to meet the US' growing electricity demand and clean-air goals. Construction of new nuclear power plants could create tens of thousands of jobs in project development, construction operations, and manufacturing. The nuclear industry will need more workers. The Nuclear Energy Institute's 2009 wrorkforce survey indicated that 21,600 nuclear utility employees (38% of the total nuclear utility workforce) will be eligible to retire by 2014. Building new reactors will lead to increasing demand for skilled labor at all levels. Congress should promote policies as part of job-creation or energy legislation that helps the industry realize these goals.
